Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi- Review

Roopali V. Nayak, a first-year student at Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi has written this first-hand review of her college.

Introduction

Vaikunta Baliga College of Law is a unit of Dr. T. M. A. Pai Foundation, Manipal. It is affiliated to Karnataka State Law University, Hubballi. It is also recognized by the Bar Council of India and the University Grants Commission.

Infrastructure

Library and Reading Room:

There is a newly constructed library block called Jynana Sindhu which is capable of accommodating 100 students with rich collection of books, newspapers, magazines, journals, etc., for learning and research. The library has a collection of more than 25000 volumes and subscribes more than 30 journals.

Library book bank:

Dr. T. M. A. Pai Centenary book bank facility has been provided specially to lend text books to the poor and deserving and also SC/ST students on the recommendation of library committee.

Computer Lab:

Institution also provides computer lab with more than 20 computers. Students can have access to internet and e-resources for learning. The college provides basic computer training to the students.

Hostel Accommodation:

Hostel facilities for ladies and gents have been situated in a quiet and congenial environment close to the college.

Faculty:

The faculty is highly qualified and aim at providing quality education to all it’s students.

Fee Structure:

Around 30,000-40,000 per year for every course, which is very economical, by which the college is ranked 1st place by India Today-2022  in colleges with best value for money.

College also provides for loan and scholarship facilities.

Curriculum:

Curriculum is set by the Karnataka State Law University ,and the college follows semester system. 

Courses Offered:

  • 3 year LL.B Course for graduates(Eligibility: Any degree with a minimum aggregate 44.5% marks, 39.5% for SC/ST candidates) 
  • 5 year B.A.LL.B Course for 12th pass students of any combination(Eligibility: Minimum aggregate 44.5% marks,39.5% for SC/ST candidates)
  • P.G. Diploma Course in Cyber Law and Information Technology Law(Eligibility: Any degree)
  • Certificate Course in Law and Medicine(Eligibility:12th pass of any combination)
  • College also offers add-on courses like basic computer education, language lab(English),etc.

Facilities

Apart from Library, Computer Lab, Sports, the college provides for various committees like Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Anti Ragging Committee, Academic Committee, Library Committee, NSS-National Service Scheme, Cultural Committee, Sports club, Career Guidance or Placement Cell, SC/ST Cell, ICI Committee.

Placements

There is a training and placement cell in the college which organizes seminars and programs on leadership, Communication Skills, etc. Also helps in preparing for job interviews by inviting experts from the concerned fields.

The college has entered an Memorandum of Understanding with SDM Law College, Mangalore which facilities campus pooling every year.

Student life(Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities):

Moot Court Activities

Separate Civil and Criminal Moot Courts are conducted on regular basis in both English and Kannada to train the Law students regarding the skills of advocacy.

The college holds national Moot Court competition every year to encourage the Law students to take up the legal profession with more confidence.

College also encourages students to take part in competitions organized by other colleges.

Sports and Games

The college gives equal importance to sports and games at par with curricular activities. The Department of Physical Education is headed by a full time Physical Director. Students from our college have represented the University in Inter-University tournaments.

The college also stands in one of the top five positions in the University in sports and games.

Cultural Activities

The cultural club provides ample of opportunity to our students to showcase their talents in various co-curricular activities of the college and also encourages them to take part at the University Level, National Level, State Level, Intercollege cultural competitions. The college has a legacy of being one among the top five position in the cultural competition held at the University Level.

Senior Junior Culture

Seniors are very good, they support juniors and help them with their doubts.

 Conclusion and Rating

The college came into existence in the year 1957, having been in existence for the past 66 years this college is one of the oldest law colleges in Karnataka.

The excellent coaching and the exposure provided by the college attracts large number of students including students from neighboring states of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, etc.

The college has been Re-Accredited with B+ by NAAC.

Value education with a human touch along with value for money is what the college stands by, so whoever seeking to build a career in the field of law can opt for this college.
