School of Law Galgotias University: Review

School of Law, Galgotias University

Ritika Pandey, a 3rd year Law Student at the School of Law, Galgotias University has written this first-hand review of her law college.

INTRODUCTION

Galgotias University is a private university located in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The University has been granted an A+ ranking by The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is also accredited by NBA for the fields of Engineering and MBA.

The University comprises of various branches and the School of Law is a part of it. The School of Law was established in the year 2012. It is a reputable law university offering a 5-year integrated B.A.LLB (Hons.), B.B.A.LLB (Hons.), 3-year LLB course and 2 years LLM course with specializations in Corporate Law, Constitution Law, Intellectual Property Law and Criminal Law.

The School of Law also runs a Certificate Course on Advanced Professional Advocacy Skills headed by Justice JR Midha, Former Judge, at Delhi High Court.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The School of Law is settled on the 4th and 5th floor of the A-block of the University. It comprises of 12 classrooms, 1 Moot Courtroom, 1 Law library and 3 faculty cabins. The number of classrooms is never sufficient for classes to be conducted for all years simultaneously. Hence different batches are called at different time slots of the day. The University claims the classrooms to be fully air-conditioned but only 50% of the air-conditioners are in working condition.

FACULTY

Galgotias University has an average range of faculty. Some teachers are really good but some are just average. The faculty who are good always try to create a unique understanding during their teaching and their classes are very valuable and interesting. These teachers are available for students at any time. Although there are some teachers you really can’t deal with as they won’t let you prove your contention as for them only, they are right.

FEE STRUCTURE

The fee structure of the School of Law, Galgotias University is affordable and much more economical than various other institutions in the same city. The annual fees B.A.LLB (Hons.) course and B.B.A.LLB (Hons.) course is Rupees One Lakh and Ten Thousand (Rs. 1,10,000/-). The annual fee for LLB(Hons.) is Rupees Sixty Thousand (Rs. 60,000/-) and for LLM(Hons.) is Rupees Sixty-Five Thousand (Rs. 65,000/-).

The fee is to be paid yearly and is generally asked to be paid in the month of March. The students paying the fees before 31st March are given a rebate of up to 7%. The fees can be paid through various modes such as Paytm, NEFT, Cheque, Demand draft etc.

FACILITIES

The School of Law, Galgotias University provides us with a law library with all the bare acts and books related to law. The University also has a Central Library where we can find books related to different elective subjects and necessary reference books. The complete system of issuing books is digital. Apart from this, the library also consists of e-resources like Lexis Nexis, Manupatra, SCC Online, JSTOR, etc which has helped students a lot in times of complete lockdown. Apart from this, the University provides us with a Moot Court Room, which is generally locked.

PLACEMENTS

Although the University claims a 100% placement guarantee however this is just not totally correct. The students of Criminal Honours and Constitutional Honours students, who do not want to pursue litigation and join legal firms, barely get any placement as no such firms visit the University. The placement ratio of Corporate and Intellectual Property Rights Honours students is 1 out of 15.

The Placement Committee is of no help to students. The most serious yet ironic issue is that the Committee consists of only one faculty. Neither the University guarantees you a placement nor do they provide you with a NOC (No Objection Certificate). Even in the final year so that you can continue your work and practice somewhere else. They make it compulsory for us to attend college even in the final year with an attendance criterion of 75%.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Moot Courts

To begin with, the University organizes In-house Moot Court Competition every semester with the help of the Moot Court society. The Moot Court Society also keeps us well updated about the Moot Court competitions being carried on across the nation. Workshops are conducted by Moot Court Society for the students to motivate them to take part in various moots. They are followed by another workshop wherein they were briefed about the benefits and importance of the Moot Court Competition. It also includes how it will help them to become a more confident and better person in their life.

Legal Aid Clinic

Next comes the Legal Aid Clinic which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr Justice Dipak Misra at the School of Law Galgotias University on April 26, 2014. The Legal Aid Clinic has been set up in collaboration with the UP State Legal Service Authority in order to give effect to the policy and directions of the National Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 and the National Legal Services Authority (Legal Aid Clinics) Scheme, 2010. The School of Law, Galgotias University established the Students Legal Aid Clinic to provide free legal aid to needy persons and the members of the weaker sections of society.

The Clinic has conducted legal awareness programs among people particularly illiterates and economically weaker sections. Also among those who are living in remote backward areas near the Law School. It has created awareness about their legal rights and duties and made them aware of the availability of various social welfare schemes sponsored by the State and Central Government.

Legal Aid Clinic of Galgotias University has been awarded the top ten best legal aid clinics title of India by Knowledge Steez Edu Hub in the year 2018 and year 2019. The clinic is also awarded the title of Legal Aid Emerging 2020-21 by Allahabad University and Droit Penal Group at the 4th National Symposium & Awards on 9th and 10th January 2021.

Newsletter

The School of Law, Galgotias University also publishes its own newsletter every semester which highlights the achievements of its students and faculty members. A separate committee is made for these 3 which comprises 3 students and 2 faculty members.

SENIOR-JUNIOR CULTURE

The senior-junior culture of the University is pretty good. There is no sort of ego among the senior students over here and they make you feel like a family. The seniors help out their juniors in every situation and make the University a comfortable place for you. They will guide you and keep you well-informed about upcoming opportunities. I have had a great batch of seniors, they will never let you feel less than them. The seniors not only help us in academics but also in partying.

CONCLUSION & RATING

To conclude, I would just say that every University has its own pros and cons and most probably it depends upon the person’s view. I would like to give my university a rating of 7/10, for all that it has taught me. Hope it creates a lifetime memory for me.
